Leadership Development - Learning Vs Making
Leadership is a funny thing. One might think that you or someone in your organization can be a leader. You, or, can learn all about leadership, study the theory and tactics day after day. But you never know if that leadership development is equal to anything until you or actually on stage.
Leadership development is largely a theoretical exercise. Leadership, however, is a practical reality. To put it another way, there is a big difference between learning about leadership and being a leader.
You can pick up Ted Williams' "The Science of hitting" and all that Charlie Lau never put on paper. You can study, memorize and know inside and out. You can integrate information by looking at the three major league baseball games a day for a full season, taking notes to hit with all the stop. You can then study those notes for hours every night before going to bed. You can become the world's greatest expert on the art and science of hitting a baseball.
But what would happen if he stuck a Louisville Slugger in your hands and told you to enter in the box with Zack Greinke on the mound?
As the song says, "One, two, three strikes - you're out."
There is a big difference between knowing and doing. Some skills require only that certain "something." Extras That innate inclination ... This natural tendency ...
Leadership is so.
Leadership development is important. It provides the basis from which a leader can work. However, it creates leadership skills. This is a supplement and a way to highlight that the capacity, but it is not a substitute for the intangible force that separates the leaders of the pack.
It 's important to realize that. Otherwise, you can sink a great deal of time and resources in leadership development in situations that simply do not give results. At some point, you need to start testing the waters very real, allowing those who are involved in development programs to spread their wings in a controlled environment and actually see whether the knowledge they are gaining is actually translates into a ability to lead.
It is not necessary to put the batter amateur against a Cy Young winner, but you should let them take some swings in the batting cage. It will give you a much better idea of whether I'll ever be able to earn a place in the programs .......
